Introduction to NCU
Nanchang University (website: http://www.ncu.edu.cn/) is a national university situated in Nanchang, the provincial capital city of Jiangxi province, which is located on the south of the Yangtze River. Jiangxi is famous as the home of porcelain (china). Nanchang university dates from Jiangxi Public Medical College and National Chung-cheng University, which were founded in 1921 and 1940 respectively. Later on,Jiangxi University merged with Jiangxi Industrial University to set up Nanchang University in 1993, which created a precedent for the reform of the national higher education system. In 1997,Nanchang University was listed as one of the national key universities of the “211 project”, which is a joint cooperation project of the People’s Government of Jiangxi Province and the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China. In 2005, Nanchang University and Jiangxi Medical College merged to form the new Nanchang University, unveiling a new page in school reform and development. Therefore, the new Nanchang University continued its tradition of higher education began in 1921 in the 21st century.
Over the years, the central Government, the Ministry of Education, and Jiangxi Provincial Party Committee and the Provincial Government have attached great important to the construction and development of Nanchang University. Several national leaders, such as the former President of China Jiang Zemin, and the current President of China Xi Jinping have successively visited Nanchang University. When President Xi Jinping inspected the university, he was deeply affectionate and said “Nanchang University has unlimited prospects.” Also, State Councilor Liu Yandong expects Nanchang University to be a world-class university with Chinese characteristics.
Nanchang University consists of five campuses: Qian-Hu Main campus; Qingshan-Hu; Dong-Hu; Poyang-Hu and Fuzhou campus. And it has the whole area of more than 534 hectares. Its main campus is located at Qian-Hu, Nanchang and it occupies an area of 300 hectares and is the campus where all the undergraduate student, the majority of graduate students, most research institutes and labs and most faculty and staff are based. The other campus are situated around Jiangxi province.
With a first-class infrastructure and teaching conditions, NCU is the main node of CERNET in Jiangxi Province and the only modeling net university which has been upgraded to IPV6 in all areas and linked to CNGI. NCU has 13 affiliated hospitals of different ranks and categories, among which there are 6 national top tertiary general hospitals and one top tertiary stomatological hospital.
NCU has a disciplinary system featured by coordinated development of art, science, medicine and engineering. It, currently, runs 100 undergraduate programs covering 12 disciplines, 8 disciplines and 64 sub-disciplines which confer Ph.D. degrees, 45 disciplines which confer master degrees, 8 post-doctoral research stations, 8 academic doctoral degree disciplines of first-level, 1 professional doctoral program, 15 professional master programs and equivalent master programs for part-time postgraduates. In addition, NCU boasts 1 national key laboratory, 1 national engineering technology research center, 2 national key disciplines, 1 national key discipline under cultivation, 2 key laboratories of Ministry of Education, 2 engineering centers of Ministry of Education, 1 key humanity and social science research base of Ministry of Education, 3 innovation teams of Ministry of Education, 1 national clinical pharmacology base, 5 national clinical specialty, 1 branch of National Stem Cell Engineering Technology Research Center. It boasts 3 state experiment teaching modeling centers, 9 featured specialties, 1 teaching group, 2 quality curriculums, 1 modeling bilingual teaching curriculum, 5 provincial high-standard disciplines and 2 high-standard laboratories, 1 high-standard engineering (technology) research center, 16 provincial key disciplines and 6 modeling master programs of the twelfth five-year plan.
NCU has a total faculty of 4624, among which 1556（occupies approximately 45.68%） are professors and associate professors, 853 （approximately 25.58%）have Ph. D degrees, 2105（approximately 70.7%） have master or above degrees, 214 are part-time doctors of high-level domestic and overseas universities or research institutions. NCU currently has 4 Dual-Employed Academicians, 1 foreign academician, 4 recipients of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 5 members of Yangtze Scholars Scheme, 1 member of Discipline Evaluation Group of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, 5 National Young and Middle-aged Experts with Outstanding Contributions, 1 outstanding expert selected by Ministry of Health, 1 National Prominent Teacher, 2 winners of Bethune Award, 5 members of first and second level of the National Hundred, Thousand and Ten Thousand Talents Project, 3 persons listed in the National Thousand Talents Project, 10 members of New Century Excellent Talents Support Project, 4 exclusively employed members of Jinggang Scholars Project, 93 recipients of special allowances provided by State Council and provincial government.

NCU has formed an initial diversified talents cultivation system which is based on promoting quality education and all-round development of students, seeking a cultivation mode of pioneering, innovative talents with cross-disciplinary backgrounds. NCU boasts 11,573 postgraduates of all kinds and 67,503 full-time undergraduate and 3-year students (with the main campus accommodating 37,328 undergraduates). NCU is among the first universities of College Innovation Experiments Project and the first experimental universities of Excellent Engineers Cultivation Project.
NCU earnestly promotes international exchange and cooperation. It has maintained stable exchanges and cooperative relationships with about 60 universities and institutions in over 30 countries and regions. The Confucius Institute constructed by NCU was selected as excellent institute by Confucius Institute Headquarters for three consecutive years. NCU plays leading role in promoting regional culture and has made great efforts to push forward brand-culture construction and innovation. NCU has established art associations like Nanchang Philharmonic Orchestra and Jiangxi Opera Art Research Center. NCU was contracted to hold the 29th International Music Education Conference and creatively developed campus cultural series with Qianhu cultural brand as the main part.

Nanchang is the capital of Jiangxi Province in southeastern China. Located in the north-central part of the province, it is bounded on the west by the Jiuling Mountains and on the east by Poyang Lake. Because of its strategic location connecting the prosperous East and South China, it has become a major railway hub in Southern China in recent decades. Nanchang, named as Hero City is a cultural city with long history. It is a state-list famous historical and culture city with over 2200 years of history. Nanchang is known as National Civilized City, International Garden City, and National Landscape Garden City, attracting more and more people from different countries for traveling.

Nanchang cuisine belongs to Jiangxi cuisine, characterized by crisp, fresh, spicy and salty taste. Local vegetables appear in almost every dish with the use of wild flowers also common, like the rest place of south China, rice is staple with pork usually substituting beef as the main meat used, and chicken is also widely used. Nanchang is famous for its food, spice is added to most dishes and frying is main form of cooking.
Nanchang has a monsoon-influenced humid subtropical climate with four distinct seasons. Winters are short and cool with occasional frosts; it begins somewhat sunny and dry but becomes progressively wetter and more overcast. Spring begins especially gloomy, and from April to June, each month has more than 220 mm (8.7 in) of rainfall. Summer is long and humid, with amongst the highest temperatures of any Chinese provincial capital, and with the sun shining close to 60 percent of the time in July and August, is the sunniest time of year. Autumn is warm to mild with the lowest rainfall levels of the year. The monthly 24-hour average temperature ranges from 5.5 °C (41.9 °F) in January to 29.5 °C (85.1 °F) in July, while the annual mean is 18.00 °C (64.4 °F).
